Automotive Mission Plan 2047 statement should be out in 6 months: Hanif Qureshi

India’s automotive industry, under the guidance of the government, has started working on the Automotive Mission Plan 2047 and the mission statement is expected to be released within the next six months, according to the Ministry of Heavy Industries Additional Secretary Hanif Qureshi.

The Automotive Mission Plan is the industry’s initiative; the government only has a facilitating role in it. We have had 2 or 3 meetings and have set up sub-committees where all industries are represented. Within 6 months, this document should be out,” Qureshi said while speaking at the India EV Conclave organised by Autocar Professional.

The Automotive Mission Plan 2047 (AMP 2047) will be a roadmap aimed at boosting India’s position in global manufacturing and trade. Under the guidance of the Ministry of Heavy Industries, seven expert sub-committees, including industry bodies, academia and government agencies, have started discussions to set out milestones in phases till 2047.

Participation includes multiple ministries - road transport, commerce, power, petroleum, environment - together with trade bodies such as Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA), and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

“The important point is that it should be a representative sample of the industry across all OEMs, across all component makers, across all vehicle categories. It must also have the inputs from the relevant ministries, states and academia. So the challenge is really to incorporate all the voices and then align it with the vision of Vixit Bharat which our Honorable Prime Minister,” he said.

The initiative align with the government’s broader “Viksit Bharat @2047” vision, signalling a shift from incremental growth to strategic transformation of India’s automotive ecosystem. The mission will focus on boosting exports, enhancing manufacturing excellence and embedding innovation and sustainability across the sector.

The move follows the earlier AMP 2016-26 framework, which aimed to bring Indian automotive manufacturing among the top three globally and raise the industry’s share of GDP while generating tens of millions of jobs.

Despite being the fourth largest automobile producer globally, India has a modest share in the global automotive component trade, which amounts to approximately $20 billion.

The bulk of global trade in automotive components is driven by engine components, drive transmission, and steering systems, but India’s share in these high-precision segments remains low at just 2-4%.

India’s automotive sector faces challenges on account of operational cost [primarily compared to China], infrastructural gaps, moderate GVC integration, and inadequate R&D expenditure that impacts competitiveness in the global value chain.

The India EV Conclave 2025 was presented by Chargezone, with Rosmerta Technologies as the Platinum Partner. The event is powered by IPG Automotive and Gulf Oil Lubricants India, with PTC serving as the Technology Partner. Associate Partners include Spark Minda, Radici Group, and Delta Electronics. The conclave also has trade partnerships with FADA, ASDC, and ICAT.
